Xinjiang, meaning, “New Frontier”, is actually nothing of the sort. Xinjiang has been a populated and fought over area for a very long time.

In the 1st century B.C., Chinese emperor Wu Ti first claimed Chinese interest in the area by ousting the Huns to occupy the region. In the 2nd century A.D., China lost control to the Uzbek Confederation.

China re-occupied the area in the 7th century A.D, it was conquered by the Tibetans and overrun with Uigurs. In the 10th century it was invaded by the Arabs and in the 13th century was taken by the Mongols. Anarchy reined until the coming of the Manchu in 1756.

More recently, Xinjiang was to join the Communist movement without a fight in 1949, though a rebellion in 1954 prompted China to allow Xinjiang Autonomous status.

Today Xinjiang with it’s inter-racial background is a unique feature in China. It may surprise foreigners to know that because of the varied backgrounds of those who settled here, there are now Chinese people who have blue eyes and curly brown hair.

This is the place you’ve probably never thought about, but you should think again. Xinjiang is a real travelers destination.
